What is a Contemporary style house plan?
The contemporary style is unique in that it doesn’t reject the style that preceded it, but derives in part from the evocative minimalism of 20th century modern architecture, while incorporating a postmodern enthusiasm for newer looks and trends. Clean lines, flat or shallow gabled roof, asymmetrical or curved shapes, an eye for geometry and a reverence for natural light and open space—these are its immediate hallmarks. Also striking is the idiosyncratic use of natural and contrasting materials, along with a focus on energy efficiency and complimentary landscaping. In municipalities where a housing crunch has encouraged the use of laneway homes, the space efficiency of the contemporary style has made it exceedingly popular.
• A development rather than a rejection of the modernist style • Clean and unfussy • Eccentric and irregular shapes, shallow or flat roof • Open plan interiors • Large windows allowing lots of natural light • Natural and sustainable materials
